I know, I know, the subject is ominous, but I had to get you to read this! We really are here to help you avoid
the complications of a failed HIPAA Audit! As healthcare providers, you understand your patients want frank “give it to
me straight” talk when discussing their care. When discussing Privacy, Security and Compliance, I’m hoping you want
“give it to me straight” talk! So here it goes.
The truth is, you may very well fail a HIPAA/HITECH audit if it comes anytime soon. The simple fact that you’re probably
not compliant in one or more elements of HIPAA/HITECH is enough to drive the Office of Civil Rights to levy fines.
Why could you fail? HIPAA is complex and intricate. Managing it up until now has been a major PITA (Pain in the A**).
“We had our annual training visit from the HIPAA guy and received a little binder. We’re HIPAA compliant, right?”
I seriously doubt you can pass an audit based on what I know about the product “the HIPAA guy” is dropping off.
Having policies and procedures in a binder that are not implemented properly or practiced by staff is useless.
Ask your staff these questions: What happens when you gain a new staff member? Do they wait for their required
HIPAA Training until next year when “the HIPAA guy” comes by for training? What about changes throughout the year?
Are you still sharing user id’s and passwords? Are you still sending insecure email containing PHI? Bang! You failed.
